program stopped working

I have a client whose workstation started randomly saying it was un-able to launch a few menu items.  This typically means the corresponding exe file was not found but the files existed.  These same menu items run fine on the server hosting SL 2011 SP1.  Then, for a few days, the same menu items worked but then started failing again.  We tried a workstation reboot but that did not fix the issue.  We then tried un-installing the SL client and installing it over again but now all the menu items issue a message that they have stopped working.  We have verified that the correct client was installed (SL 2001 SP1) and tried the whole un-install and re-install cycle again but the issue persists on this particular workstation (running Windows 7).  The fact that Dynamics SL starts up fine (gets to the main menu) but it is unable to launch any of the exe files attached to menu items has us lost as to what to look at.  We are considering a wipe of the workstation but, before doing that, we are curious if anyone has run into a similar issue and determine how to resolve it.
